How do I stop SPAM?

The way to fight spam is to NOT get placed on spam databases. Don't let spammers know your email address(es) exists. Once you're on a database, you'll NEVER get off. The spam will only continue to get WORSE as time marches on. Spammers sell, trade, and give their lists away. So the spam will only get worse.

We don't care what anti-spam companies say, The spam filters out there do NOT work. You can put a setting in a spam filter for every spam email subject you get AND you can also block specific email addresses, but it will not do any good. The same spammer will bypass the
spam filters the next time (or next day) they send you spam. Blocking an email address does nothing! The spam people send from a DIFFERENT email address and then that next spam email comes in and does not get blocked. In addition, you'll end up missing
legitimate email that the spam filters have filed as spam. To be 100% sure you receive all good email, you'll wind up checking your spam filters anyway. If you do that, what is the use of even using a spam filter?

Our email filters block out over 99% of the spam. If you use our email servers and receiving spam, what you're receiving now is only 1% of what we can't block. We have clients that come to us from other hosting companies and they would get 100 - 150 spam emails
per day. After the new clients are on our mail servers, they end up getting only 2 - 3 spam emails per day. All of a sudden, they think there is a problem with our email servers because they aren't receiving a huge load of junk email every day! Of course they are happy about not recieving all the spam!

FYI, once you are on our email servers, if you start receiving a lot of spam, then you need to have your Spam FOLDER on BUMMERMAIL.COM activated. If you login to BummerMail.com and see a Spam folder in Red, then your spam folder has NOT been activated. If you want that Spam Folder Activated, submit a Tech Support and ask for the Spam Folder to be activated. Be sure to specify which domain, domains, and what email, emails you want the Spam Folder activated for.

Once your Spam Folder is activated, you will notice a huge drop in spam. You will still need to check the SPAM Folder periodically, at BummerMail.com to be sure there are no legitmate emails ending up there. This may happen occasionally, but it is rare. If you find there is a legitimate email inside your Spam Folder, simply "White List" it, or "allow" it. DO NOT EVER BLACK LIST EMAILS, this will cause your problems. At Bummer Hosting, we alone use over 50 email addresses. If you combined all 50 email addresses together so you can count our total daily spam, you may count 2 or 3 spam emails daily. This isn't per email address, this is for the 50 email addresses we use ourselves added together. In addition, over 30 of the email addresses we use are original since 1999, when Bummer Hosting Solutions came to be. We have NEVER used a spam filter and we receive ALL of our legitimate email.

REASONS YOU ARE GETTING SPAM

1) The reason you get so much spam is that you have broken the MAIN rule to not getting spam. You list all of your emails on your website. Spammers LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE this! I hope we made our point. All spammers have "bots" that search web sites for email addresses. You can't hide the email address in the web page or even "encrypt" the email addresses as most good spammers know this and how to bypass this! You NEVER put an email address on a website, whether it be a hyperlink or simple text. NEVER NEVER NEVER.

It seems most webmasters do not even know this! It surprises us on how many companies and people claim to be "webmasters". If they were good at their job, they would not let their clients put their email addresses on their websites. They would install form
software for them. Not all form software is the same. Much of it doesn't stop a spammers due to bad coding. Most form software can be hacked for email addresses and/or spammed by bots too! Our (Bummer Hosting) form software can NOT be hacked, nor
can it be spammed. If you are not currently using our Form software, you should request it via tech support.

2) Spammers have email collection sites or pay email collection sites. One such site is Hallmark (yes the greeting cards). Sites like this are for free email cards (e-cards) people send for birthdays, etc. NOTHING on the net is for free. So why are the e-cards and
other offerings on the net for free? They SELL your email address, and the person's email you're sending to, for money! These are very valuable and spammers pay a premium as these are obviously "verified and current" email addresses.

3) Purchases made from stores on the net. Yes, they sell to spammers also. Those that don't sell email addresses are usually "hacked" due to bad security. Many lie about their spam policies. So you should always use a "JUNK" email address such as Yahoo, Excite, Hotmail. Thus you'll never get placed on spam lists. It is easier to weed out your spam on your Yahoo, Excite and or Hotmail email accounts, then your domain email accounts.

4) Many people have computers that have been hacked. Our estimate is that over 70% of the computers (including yours) have spy ware or viruses on them. This is very common and many people don't know it. They'll say "if there was a problem I'd know it
because I would see the problems". Well, the new trend is for you NOT to know it. Thus they (hackers, spammers) can collect all the email addresses and other data they want, for as long as they want. If you never know, they will always have total access to your
computer and can use it for what they want. Spammers send about 40% of their spam from personal computers located in houses and offices. This is one of the reasons spam filters don't work, there are too many addresses and places the spam originates from and it's always different. Impossible to track!

5) People click on the spam "removal links" to get taken off of spam lists. Most of the time this doesn't work. Often times it actually INCREASES your spam.  In many cases, by clicking on the "remove" link, you are actually VERIFYING that you received the spam.
Thus, you are place on "special priority" lists which means you'll now receive MORE spam!

6) NEVER open an email that is spam. They will put a small 1x1 pixel you can't see on your computer. It will report back to them (the spammer, hacker) that the email address was opened. When it's been reported, it #5 above all over again!

*** THE SURE SPAM FIX

1) You need to REPLACE all email addresses for your website with new email addresses. Use the form software we set up for you. Form software gives your site a professional look, stops spam, and you can ask specific questions. Or you can have a simple form, that does not ask questions, except maybe email address and comments.

2) You should enable your spam folders in bummer mail. To do so:

#1. Contact us via your Tech Support admin. Ask that your spam filter or spam folder be enabled on your bummer email account. Please specify which or what email addresses you want the spam folder enabled for. Please be aware: We cannot activate or enable spam folders for an email that is not hosted by us. We can only enable this for your domain email that you host with us. Example: yourname@yourdomainname.com

#2. Once we have enabled your spam filter or spam folder, then you will need to:

.....1. Login to your bummmer mail account.

.....2. Go to -> settings -> server rules -> and check to see that the "enable box" is checked. Once this is done, you will know your spam filters are ready to go.

.....3. Check your spam filter, via your bummer mail account, on a daily basis for a while. You will need to be sure that legitimate email is not inside the spam folder. If you DO see legitimate email inside the spam folder, then click on it like you would do to read the email. Then click the Green Check Mark (If you roll over the green check mark you will see it says "white list"). After you do this, any other emails you receive from this address will not be put into the spam folder. They will go to your inbox. Check your spam folder every day or so for about one or two weeks to be sure there is no legitimate email there. After this time you should not have any problems. To be sure, you shoud look at your spam folder occasionally to be sure no legitimate email that you haven't "white listed" yet is there. You should empty your spam filter every few days as well.

DO NOT EVER BLACK LIST SPAM EMAILS. Black listing does nothing but slow down the delivery of legitimate emails.

Pay attention to what is written above and you'll never get any more spam.
